Frank Jan de Graaf argues that the domination of neoclassical economic thinking in academia has contributed to the economic crisis and hindered thinking about sustainable development. Currently, ethics is re-entering the debate about how to develop prosperous open societies. A group of NGOs recently came up with an interesting alternative perspective on economics and social development. The 21st century’s rapidly compounding crises – from climate and ecological breakdown to extreme social inequities of power and opportunity – make it irrefutably clear that the global economic system must be transformed if humanity and the rest of life on Earth are to thrive. Doughnut Economics provides an increasingly recognised compass for such a thriving future, and is focused on meeting the needs of all people within the means of the living planet, by creating economies that are regenerative and distributive by design. What are the implications for the role and transformation of business, if it is to be part of this future?This paper explores how the deep design of business – through a company’s Purpose, Networks, Governance, Ownership, and Finance – powerfully shapesits strategic decisions and operational impacts, and ultimately determines whether or not businesses can transform to become part of a regenerative and distributive future. By diving into five layers of deep design, this paper reveals both design blockages that prevent transformative action, and design innovations that can unlock its possibility. In addition, this paper recognises that industry-level and system-wide transformations are crucial for turning the inheritance of a degenerative and divisive economic system into the beginnings of a regenerative and distributive one.
Subjects such as public finance, corporate finance, banking theory, risk management and management accounting are all largely based on the neoclassical approach. Most recent appointed professors have started their work with ideas based on a neoclassical fundament and its methodological preferences. Neoclassical economic thinking is not bad in itself. It has brought much good, even. However, now the downside of neoclassical theory has occurred. Failing financial markets have plunged the global economy into crisis. It is, therefore, high time for a debate on economic concepts as taught in universities and business schools. Are students really trained to think critically about economic theory and the consequences when economic theories are put into practice?

The postdoc candidate, Giuliana Scuderi, will strengthen the connection between the research group Biobased Buildings (BB), (collaboration between Avans University of Applied Sciences and HZ University of Applied Sciences (HZ), and the Civil Engineering bachelor programme (CE) of HZ. The proposed research aims at deepening the knowledge about the mechanical properties of biobased materials for the application in the structural and infrastructural sectors. The research is relevant for the professional field, which is looking for safe and sustainable alternatives to traditional building materials (such as lignin asphalt, biobased panels for bridge constructions, etc.). The study of the mechanical behaviour of traditional materials (such as concrete and steel) is already part of the CE curriculum, but the ambition of this postdoc is that also BB principles are applied and visible. Therefore, from the first year of the programme, the postdoc will develop a biobased material science line and will facilitate applied research experiences for students, in collaboration with engineering and architectural companies, material producers and governmental bodies. Consequently, a new generation of environmentally sensitive civil engineers could be trained, as the labour market requires. The subject is broad and relevant for the future of our built environment, with possible connections with other fields of study, such as Architecture, Engineering, Economics and Chemistry. The project is also relevant for the National Science Agenda (NWA), being a crossover between the routes “Materialen – Made in Holland” and “Circulaire economie en grondstoffenefficiëntie”. The final products will be ready-to-use guidelines for the applications of biobased materials, a portfolio of applications and examples, and a new continuous learning line about biobased material science within the CE curriculum. The postdoc will be mentored and supervised by the Lector of the research group and by the study programme coordinator. The personnel policy and job function series of HZ facilitates the development opportunity.
De maatschappelijke aandacht voor welvaartcreatie die verder reikt dan financiële welvaart en de oproep aan bedrijven om hieraan bij te dragen, groeit. MKB-familiebedrijven vinden het vanzelfsprekend om een bijdrage te leveren, maar geven ook aan dat dergelijke brede welvaartactiviteiten niet zijn ingebed in de huidige bedrijfsstrategie. Hieruit volgt de praktijkvraag: Hoe kunnen we [MKB-familiebedrijven] brede welvaartactiviteiten planmatiger aanpakken zodat we meer maatschappelijke impact kunnen maken? Het doel van het project is om interventies (werkwijzen) te ontwikkelen en te toetsen om brede welvaartcreatie bij MKB-familiebedrijven inzichtelijk te maken en de maatschappelijke impact ervan te vergroten door ‘ad hoc’ uitgevoerde activiteiten planmatiger aan te pakken. De centrale onderzoeksvraag is: Hoe kunnen MKB-familiebedrijven brede welvaartactiviteiten koppelen aan hun bedrijfsstrategie en de maatschappelijke impact van deze activiteiten vergroten? Het project wordt uitgevoerd door het Lectoraat Familiebedrijven van Windesheim, het Kenniscentrum Business Innovation van Hogeschool Rotterdam, en met Utrecht University School of Economics. We starten het project met acht MKB-familiebedrijven, met wie interventies worden ontwikkeld, waarna andere familiebedrijven aansluiten en in twee rondes de interventies worden doorontwikkeld. FBNed is aangesloten voor de valorisatie in Nederland en internationaal via hun koepelorganisatie FBN. De belangrijkste onderzoeksmethode in het project is de meervoudige case study methode. Verwachte outcome: Maatschappelijke impact van MKB-familiebedrijven vergroten door: • Kennis over hoe MKB-familiebedrijven zich (kunnen) ontwikkelen in brede welvaartcreatie; • De (h)erkenning van MKB-familiebedrijven in brede welvaartcreatie; • Bewustwording van kansen die brede welvaarcreatie MKB-familiebedrijven kan bieden. Verwachte output: • Een werkboek met een scan voor MKB-familiebedrijven om de huidige en gewenste situatie t.a.v. brede welvaartcreatie inzichtelijk te maken, inclusief interventies om brede welvaartactiviteiten te verankeren in de strategie en maatschappelijke impact te maken; • Twee wetenschappelijke artikelen, vijf vakpublicaties, acht teaching cases en vijf seminars in samenwerking met FBNed om resultaten breed te delen, voor onderwijs, wetenschappelijk publiek en bedrijven.
In 2017, renowned Prof Kate Raworth from Oxford University and Amsterdam University introduced Doughnut Economics, an economic model to enable humans to thrive within the planetary boundaries and resources. Several private and public actors, including the city of Amsterdam, adopted the model in their circular economy development's strategies. Doughnut-Architecture aims to develop further the AREA (Atelier for Resilient Environmental Architecture) Framework, a tool designed by graduating students Charlotte Uiterwaal, Isabella van der Griend, Ryan McGaffney, Karolina Bäckman, at the faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology (TU-Delft), under the supervision of Henri van Bennekom. AREA-Framework support architects to intervene in the built environment taking as a reference the Doughnut Economics model. The AREA-Framework is at an initial stage, and its categories and subcategories are only qualitative. TU-Delft, the architectural practices Space&Matter and SuperuseStudios, in collaboration with the interdepartmental research group Circular Built Environment Hub (CBEH) and architectural practices from the network of 400 construction companies belonging to the Ex'tax project, the advice from Kate Raworth and the Amsterdam-Donut-Coalitie will further develop the AREA-Framework primarily quantitatively and also qualitatively. TU-Delft, Space&Matter, SuperuseStudios, other architectural practices from the Ex'tax-network will test the framework on different phases of real projects, interdepartmental research and education. The ultimate goal is to develop the framework further, to increase the number of architectural practices successfully implementing the Doughnut Economics in the built environment at a national level. The framework will contribute to positioning the architectural practices concerning Doughnut Economics and the Circular Economy. The project results are firstly an online open-access publication about the further developed Framework to be applied by architects; secondly, the preparation and submission of a follow-up research proposal about the extended development and implementation of the Framework applicable to the built environment by all the Ex'tax construction sector companies.
