Logistics concepts for light electric freight vehicles

The demand for the transport of goods within the city is rising and with that the number of vans driving around. This has adverse effects on air quality, noise, safety and liveability in the city. LEFVs (Light Electric Freight Vehicles) offer a potential solution for this. There is already a lot of enthusiasm for the LEFVs and several companies have started offering the vehicles. Still many companies are hesitating to start and experience. New knowledge is needed of logistics concepts for the application of LEFVs. This paper shows the outcomes of eight case studies about what is needed to successfully deploy LEFVs for city logistics.

From Full Freighters to Belly Cargo Aircraft: Stochastic Analysis of Alternatives for Freight in Schiphol Airport

KLM has revealed the plan to downsize the full-freight cargo fleet in Schiphol Airport, for that reason the company requires to explore the consequences of moving the cargo transported by the full freighters into the bellies of the passenger flights. In this study, the authors analyze the implications of this decision by considering the variability of the load factors and the impact that replacing old aircraft might have. The study addresses how the transition towards the belly operation should impact the current operation of KLM at Schiphol. Our study shows that the replacement of old aircraft with new 787s and 777s will have significant effect on the cargo capacity of the company. The results rise the discussion on future problems to be faced and how to make the transition from full freighter to belly operation.

Circular reduction option for mobility and holidays.

PBL is the initiator of the Work Programme Monitoring and Management Circular Economy 2019-2023, a collaboration between CBS, CML, CPB, RIVM, TNO, UU. Holidays and mobility are part of the consumption domains that PBL researches, and this project aims to calculate the environmental gains per person per year of the various circular behavioural options for both holiday behaviour and daily mobility. For both behaviours, a range of typical (default) trips are defined and for each several circular option explored for CO2 emissions, Global warming potential and land use. The holiday part is supplied by the Centre for Sustainability, Tourism and Transport (CSTT) of the BUas Academy of Tourism (AfT). The mobility part is carried out by the Urban Intelligence professorship of the Academy for Built Environment and Logistics (ABEL).The research question is “what is the environmental impact of various circular (behavioural) options around 1) holidays and 2) passenger mobility?” The consumer perspective is demarcated as follows:For holidays, transportation and accommodation are included, but not food, attractions visited and holiday activitiesFor mobility, it concerns only the circular options of passenger transport and private means of transport (i.e. freight transport, business travel and commuting are excluded). Not only some typical trips will be evaluated, but also the possession of a car and its alternatives.For the calculations, we make use of public databases, our own models and the EAP (Environmental Analysis Program) model developed by the University of Groningen. Freight Traffic Management As A Service (FTMAAS)

The main challenge addressed in FTMAAS (Freight Traffic Management As A Service) is the integration of logistics and traffic management information. Digitalization is progressing quickly in both areas, but operational connections and synergies are scarce. The mission of the FTMAAS Living Lab is to connect these two subsystems by developing, implementing and testing integrating software applications that benefit both worlds. The Living Lab focuses on the International Freight Corridor South (Rotterdam-Venlo) and manages 3 main running cases and 6 research subprojects. Research focuses on questions of value creation, analytics and optimization of both logistics and network level traffic management.

Freight Traffic Management As A Service (FTMAAS)

Dankzij digitalisering maken logistieke processen een efficiencyslag door. Een specifieke groep van toepassingen bevindt zich in de afstemming tussen logistiek en verkeer. Enerzijds kunnen logistieke planning en –uitvoering op verkeersomstandigheden worden geoptimaliseerd; anderzijds kan verkeersmanagement baat hebben bij informatie over transportprocessen. Tot nu toe ontwikkelen deze werelden zich gescheiden, en ontbreekt het aan een programma waarin systematisch alle raakvlakken worden verkend en kansrijke applicaties worden ontwikkeld. Het programma brengt deze werelden bijeen en ontwikkelt het concept van “verkeersmanagement voor goederenvervoer als dienst” zodat kansrijke toepassingen en de voorwaarden voor realisatie in beeld komen.
