The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences started a research and education group on Applied Quantum Computing at September 1st 2020. This group has a focus on Quantum Computing and Quantum Sensing. Quantum Computing is done together with the Computer Science program and Quantum Sensing with the new Technical Physics program which will start September 1st 2021. The group is involved in educational efforts to create a general awareness of Quantum Computing under the umbrella of the innovation hub Quantum.Amsterdam. In February 2021 the group starts a minor Applied Quantum Computing. Students learn how to program quantum algorithms and together with companies such as Capgemini, Qu & Co and SURFsara engage in projects solving real problems.
Op dit moment wordt overal ter wereld veel geïnvesteerd in quantumtechnologie. Zowel in de ontwikkeling van quantum computing, quantumsimulatie als quantumcommunicatie en quantum sensing. Zozeer zelfs dat er sprake is van een quantumrace omdat degene die als eerste gebruik kan maken van deze nieuwe technologie misschien wel een dusdanige voorsprong op kan bouwen dat die niet meer is in te halen door anderen.
From the article: "Computing is an interdisciplinary field that can be approached from different points of view. Each point of view has its goals, aims and fundamental assumptions. This makes computing a complex discipline. Moreover, new computing disciplines appear regularly. With the trend that ICT-professionals should have non-ICT competences as well, and non-ICT-professionals should have ICT-competences, new computing curricula are often hybrid in nature. As a hybrid computing curriculum cannot cover the full range of computing, it is interesting to investigate the 'computing part' of such curricula. Our analysis framework consists of three elements: the curricular components 'goals and objectives' and 'instructional strategies', and the underlying epistemological view on the discipline ('cultural styles'). Taking a historical perspective, we describe the origins of the ACM/IEEE Curriculum Recommendation series. We discuss the three main cultural styles of computing: theoretical, scientific and engineering. Observing that in a curriculum the above elements should be aligned, we present three trade-offs for the case of hybrid computing curricula. We apply our results to two concrete examples, Liberal Arts and Computer Science and Front End Development. Based on our investigation, we formulate recommendations for designers of hybrid computing curricula. Due to societal developments, like the introduction of the ‘civil society’, policy stimulating longer living at home and the separation of housing and care, the housing situation of older citizens is a relevant and pressing issue for housing-, governance- and care organizations. The current situation of living with care already benefits from technological advancement. The wide application of technology especially in care homes brings the emergence of a new source of information that becomes invaluable in order to understand how the smart urban environment affects the health of older people. The goal of this proposal is to develop an approach for designing smart neighborhoods, in order to assist and engage older adults living there. This approach will be applied to a neighborhood in Aalst-Waalre which will be developed into a living lab. The research will involve: (1) Insight into social-spatial factors underlying a smart neighborhood; (2) Identifying governance and organizational context; (3) Identifying needs and preferences of the (future) inhabitant; (4) Matching needs & preferences to potential socio-techno-spatial solutions. A mixed methods approach fusing quantitative and qualitative methods towards understanding the impacts of smart environment will be investigated. After 12 months, employing several concepts of urban computing, such as pattern recognition and predictive modelling , using the focus groups from the different organizations as well as primary end-users, and exploring how physiological data can be embedded in data-driven strategies for the enhancement of active ageing in this neighborhood will result in design solutions and strategies for a more care-friendly neighborhood.
Het lectoraat Applied Quantum Computing is een samenwerking tussen de Hogeschool van Amsterdam en het Centrum Wiskunde en Informatica. Dit lectoraat gaat zich bezig houden met het leggen van een verbinding tussen enerzijds fundamenteel onderzoek en anderzijds praktische problemen. In een samenwerking met IBM, Capgemini en Qusoft zullen cases en experimenten worden uitgevoerd hoe Quantum Computing bedrijven gaat beïnvloeden. Op het gebied van Quantum Communication zal onderzocht worden hoe m.b.v. Quantum Technologie gekomen kan worden tot een veilige communicatie. Ook zal aangesloten worden bij onderzoek naar en onderwijs worden ontwikkeld rondom hoe quantum mechanische effecten praktisch ingezet kunnen worden om metingen te verrichten. Onderzoek zal verricht worden naar het implementeren van theoretische oplossingen als bedacht in de laboratoria van universiteiten voor problemen bij bedrijven en instellingen. Binnen de Hogeschool van Amsterdam zal aansluiting worden gezocht met het onderzoek dat wordt gedaan binnen diverse lectoraten van de Faculteit DMCI, zoals responsible IT (i.o) en Urban Analytics en met de onderzoekers van de groep Urban Technology van de faculteit Techniek. In het onderwijs wordt een relatie bestendigd met opleidingen als HBO-ICT, waarvoor een minor wordt ontwikkeld, en Technische Natuurkunde. Daarbuiten zal verder gewerkt worden aan een netwerk om te komen tot een ecosysteem van instellingen en bedrijven. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam draagt Marten Teitsma als lector voor. Marten Teitsma heeft heeft veel ervaring in het onderwijs, ontwikkeling daarvan, als leidinggevende en is gepromoveerd in de Artificiële Intelligentie. Binnen de hogeschool heeft hij het initiatief genomen tot diverse activiteiten op het gebied van Quantum Computing.
My research investigates the concept of permacomputing, a blend of the words permaculture and computing, as a potential field of convergence of technology, arts, environmental research and activism, and as a subject of future school curricula in art and design. This concept originated in online subcultures, and is currently restricted to creative coding communities. I study in what way permacomputing principles may be used to redefine how art and design education is taught. More generally, I want to research the potential of permacomputing as a critical, sustainable, and practical alternative to the way digital technology is being taught in art education, where students mostly rely on tools and techniques geared towards maximising productivity and mass consumption. This situation is at odds with goals for sustainable production and consumption. I want to research to what degree the concept of permacomputing can be broadened and applied to critically revised, sustainable ways of making computing part of art and design education and professional practice. This research will be embedded in the design curriculum of Willem de Kooning Academy, focused on redefining the role of artists and designers to contribute to future modes of sustainable organisation and production. It is aligned with Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences sectorplan masters VH, in particular managing and directing sustainable transitions. This research builds upon twenty years of experience in the creative industries. It is an attempt to generalise, consolidate, and structure methods and practices for sustainable art and design production experimented with while I was course director of a master programme at WdKA.
