Train today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs and let today’s professionals develop themselves alongside the progress in their field - these are the two most urgent demands we need and want to meet in vocational education. However, the world is changing so rapidly that the focus of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) only on the design of initial education is no longer enough. Education must connect with industry, governments, NGOs and population in a more intensive and permanent manner.In the Northern Netherlands, in particular in the city of Groningen, higher and secondary vocational education are aware of this urgency. Therefore, knowledge institutions have innovatively developed formal partnerships with industry, governments, population and social organisations in their field. What stands out most is the cooperative model in which education institutions, local governments, citizens and entrepreneurs steadily collaborate within a single organisation, a new type of company. This is a business model where education and research cooperate with hundreds of companies, civil society organisations and social organisations in the city and the region. Each level has its own form: a Regional Cooperative for the region and a Community Cooperative for the neighbourhood. In this brochure we would like to introduce you to these forms of collaboration.

The Caribbean Netherlands are dealing with a situation where imported vegetables and fruits are mostly imported and hardly affordable. This leads to consuming unhealthy food and high obesities rates as a consequence. A lack of good agricultural practices with regard to water-smart and nature inclusive agriculture, as well as limited coping capacities to deal with hazards and climate change, results in very limited local production and interest. Initiatives that focused only on agrotechnological solutions for food resilient futures turned out to be ineffective due to a lack of local ownership, which jeopardizes sustainability. Moreover, the 'green' and 'blue' domains are not seen as attractive career perspectives among youth, hampering a bright future for those domains.

‘Wij zijn een gewaardeerd instituut op het gebied van water, energie en vitaliteit’, waarbij het belang van internationale samenwerking wordt benadrukt. De vijf onderzoeksgroepen op het gebied van water van water, Aquacultures in Delta Areas, Resilient Deltas, Building with Nature, Water Technology en Asset Management, nemen al enkele jaren deel aan Europese onderzoeksprojecten en netwerken. De Europese uitdagingen op het gebied van Water maken impliciet al wel deel uit van de onderzoekslijnen van de vijf onderzoeksgroepen. De volgende stap is dit expliciet te maken in het onderzoeksprogramma, zodat de EU Innovatieagenda’s en programma’s ook structureel deel uit maken van de onderzoeksactiviteiten die regionaal, nationaal en Europees zullen worden ondernomen de komende jaren. Dit vraagt om een strategie “HZ Water in Europa”, waarbij de vijf onderzoeksgroepen tevens de ambitie hebben uitgesproken gezamenlijk op te trekken op het brede gebied van Water. De ambitie van de vijf onderzoeksgroepen is samenwerking met EU partners op het gebied van Water te versterken, verbreden en verduurzamen om zo op een meer structurele manier een bijdrage te leveren aan de Water uitdagingen in Zeeland en andere EU regio’s. De concrete doelstellingen voor het project zijn: 1. EU thema’s water zijn ingebed in gezamenlijk EU onderzoeksprogramma Water van de 5 HZ-lectoraten 2. HZ is op het thema Water toegetreden tot minimaal 3 nieuwe EU onderzoeksnetwerken 3. met minimaal 2 partnerinstellingen is een gesprekken cyclus gestart om tot meerjarige samenwerking te komen. Door de meer structurele samenwerking in EU verband, deelname aan EU netwerken en strategische samenwerking wordt de kennispositie van de HZ verder verstevigd om zo uit te groeien tot een internationaal gewaardeerd instituut op het gebied van water, zoals verwoord in het HZ Instellingsplan 2022-2027.
Het platform “Urban Energy”, met kennisuitwisseling tussen Hogescholen onderling en de Hogescholen en de TKI Urban Energy, biedt een belangrijke meerwaarde op verschillende terreinen. Dit is te vertalen naar de volgende hoofddoelen: 1. Verrijken onderzoeksportfolio en zichtbaarheid creëren rondom praktijkgericht onderzoek 2. Versnellen en versterken noodzakelijke curriculumvernieuwing 3. Verbinding met de context, zowel in de zin van uitdagingen vanuit maatschappelijke thematiek en bedrijfsleven. Het platform vult het gat op, wat nog vaak wordt ervaren tussen o.a. academisch onderzoek en bedrijfsleven maar ook tussen verschillende beleidsthema’s. De brug naar valorisatie bijvoorbeeld richting MKB kan zo meer gestalte krijgen doordat de, voor het MKB relevante, partners in onderzoek beter gevonden kunnen worden. Het platform leidt tot op elkaar afgestemde onderzoeksactiviteiten die goed oplijnen met de maatschappelijke uitdagingen van de energietransitie in de stedelijke context en zo bijdraagt aan de effectieve en efficiënte inzet van onderzoeksmogelijkheden, maar ook de continue verrijking van het curriculum aan praktijkgerichte onderwijsinstellingen en de versterking van het bedrijfsleven. Om dit te bewerkstelligen wordt gewerkt aan activiteiten als: • Programmering voor praktijkgericht onderzoek: gezamenlijk op een brede thema complementair bewegen • Kennisuitwisseling en ervaring delen vanuit lopend onderzoek in relatie tot de openstaande uitdagingen Het platform is zowel een goede gesprekspartner voor nationale en regionale overheid en bedrijfsleven, als ook kunnen onderzoeksactiviteiten verder versterkt en verbeterd worden. Daarnaast zal het platform ook een goede verbinding bewerkstelligen rond onderwijsvernieuwing op de beroepsinhoud en verbinding met praktijkplatforms b.v.: • Link maken met Teacher's learning rond het opzetten van gezamenlijke onderzoek/onderwijs instrumenten (minoren, afstudeer ateliers, jaarlijkse battle energie neutrale stad, etc.) • Link maken met mbo en hbo, en hbo en universiteiten, voor doorlopende leerlijnen via de band van het onderzoek en een grotere onderzoeksdynamiek • Inzet van Energielinq om koppeling te leggen met bedrijven, etc. • Effectief acteren in internationale dimensie
Cycling booms in many Dutch cities. While smart cycling innovations promise to increase cycling’s modal share in the (peri-)urban transport system even further, little is understood of their impact or cost and benefit. The “Smart Cycling Futures (SCF)” program investigates how smart cycling innovations ─ including ICT-enabled cycling innovations, infrastructures, and social innovations like new business models ─ contribute to more resilient and liveable Dutch urban regions. Cycling innovations benefit urban regions in terms of accessibility, equality, health, liveability, and decreasing CO2-emissions when socially well embedded. To facilitate a transition to a sustainable future that respond to pressing issues, the SCF research project runs urban living labs in close collaboration with key stakeholders to develop transdisciplinary insights in the conditions needed for upscaling smart-cycling initiatives. Each living lab involving real-world experiments responds to the urgent challenges that urban regions and their stakeholders face today. The proposed research sub-programs focus on institutional dynamics, entrepreneurial strategies, governance and the socio-spatial conditions for smart cycling. Going beyond analysis, we also assess the economic, social, and spatial impacts of cycling on urban regions. The research program brings together four Dutch regions through academic institutions (three general and one applied-science universities); governmental authorities (urban and regional); and market players (innovative entrepreneurs). Together, they answer practice-based questions in a transdisciplinary and problem-oriented fashion. Research in the four regions generates both region-specific and universally applicable findings. Finally, SCF uses its strong research-practice network around cycling to co-create the research and run an outreach program.
