PurposeThis paper aims to consider the relationship between urban events and urban public space, asking whether cities have enough space for events and whether events have enough space in cities.Design/methodology/approachPolicy analysis surrounding events and festivals in the Netherlands is used to understand the dynamics of urban events, supported by content analysis of policy documents. A vignette of event space struggles in Amsterdam illustrates the contradictions of the event/space relationship.FindingsThe research identifies a policy shift in the Netherlands towards urban events from expansive, festivalisation strategies to defensive, NIMBYist policies. It exposes contradictions between protecting space as a living resource and the exploitation of space for regenerative purposes. Three future scenarios for urban events are outlined: conflict and competition, growth and harmony and digitalisation and virtualisation.Practical implicationsDevelops scenarios for the future relationship between events and urban space.Originality/valueProvides an analysis of the recursive spatial implications of the growth of the events sector for cities and the growth of cities for events.

Urban farming projects often involve the (temporarily) redevelopment of urban space by local co-productions of citizens and/or entrepreneurs. To realize their ambitions these coalitions often need support of public (government) resources such as time, money, space and regulation (Green Deal Stadslandbouw, 2013). This paper asks the question to what extent the development of urban farming projects can be understood as an example of planning through direct citizen participation/ participatory governance (e.g. Cornwall, 2004; Roberts, 2004) and what this means for the role of the municipal planning professional or civil servant in making these projects successful. Literature on the role of the municipal planner or civil servant in urban farming projects mainly concerns the role as enabler of projects given the many difficulties for projects. However, when looked at the development of urban farming as an example of citizen participation/ participatory governance and the transfer of social functions towards society other roles and tasks of planners seem to be important to make urban farming successful. This discussion paper looks to the role of planners and civil servants in some related government domains such as landscape (e.g. Van Dam et al. 2008, 2010, 2011) and neighbourhood development (e.g. Frieling et al., 2014) to complement our understanding of the role of planners in making urban farming projects successful. With this analysis the paper sets the scene for further research into tools for the planning professional or civil servant to support urban farming. In the paper the situation in Amsterdam serves as an example.
Purpose: Adolescents are insufficiently physically active and spent too much time sitting, which provides a health risk. In the current study the municipality of Amsterdam, secondary schools, experts in urban sports and researchers work together to stimulate healthy exercise behavior of adolescents. The urban sports facilities in the city of Amsterdam are at the center of this project. A variety of urban sports facilities have been realized over the last years. It remains however unknown which adolescents actually use these facilities. When urban space planning and physical education (PE) lessons at school are aligned and adjusted to the needs and preferences of adolescents, adolescents probably feel more competent to use the urban sport facilities surrounding their schools. The goal of this project is twofold: 1) findings working principles for designing urban sports facilities in the urban space surrounding schools 2) identifying elements in secondary school physical education lessons that motivate adolescents to use the urban sports facilities.Methods: This was investigated by applying design thinking methods and co creation sessions with adolescents, PE teachers, school boards, municipality and experts in urban sports.Results: First results indicate that needs, wishes and barriers of adolescents with regard to the use of urban sports facilities are currently insufficiently documented. Moreover, physical education teachers lack a feeling of competence in providing urban sports classes and there is insufficient coordination between schools, the municipality and providers of urban sports. Next steps in the design thinking cycle will be discussed as well as implications for the municipality with regard to planning of urban sports facilities around school, and how to connect physical education programming inside and outside secondary schools.

Designing cities that are socially sustainable has been a significant challenge until today. Lately, European Commission’s research agenda of Industy 5.0 has prioritised a sustainable, human-centric and resilient development over merely pursuing efficiency and productivity in societal transitions. The focus has been on searching for sustainable solutions to societal challenges, engaging part of the design industry. In architecture and urban design, whose common goal is to create a condition for human life, much effort was put into elevating the engineering process of physical space, making it more efficient. However, the natural process of social evolution has not been given priority in urban and architectural research on sustainable design. STEPS stems from the common interest of the project partners in accessible, diverse, and progressive public spaces, which is vital to socially sustainable urban development. The primary challenge lies in how to synthesise the standardised sustainable design techniques with unique social values of public space, propelling a transition from technical sustainability to social sustainability. Although a large number of social-oriented studies in urban design have been published in the academic domain, principles and guidelines that can be applied to practice are large missing. How can we generate operative principles guiding public space analysis and design to explore and achieve the social condition of sustainability, developing transferable ways of utilising research knowledge in design? STEPS will develop a design catalogue with operative principles guiding public space analysis and design. This will help designers apply cross-domain knowledge of social sustainability in practice.
In 2021, Citython editions were held for the European cities of Eindhoven (Netherlands), Bilbao and Barcelona (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), and Lublin (Poland). Within this project, BUAS contributed to the organization of CITYTHON Eindhoven in cooperation with CARNET (an initiative by CIT UPC) and City of Eindhoven – an event which gives young talent the opportunity to work with mentors and experts for the development of innovative urban solutions. Participants of CITYTHON Eindhoven worked on three challenges:- Traffic safety in school zones - Travel to the campus- Make the city healthy The event took place between 18 May and 2 June 2021 with various experts, for example from ASML, City of Eindhoven and University of Amsterdam, giving inspirational talks and mentoring students throughout the ideation and solutions development process. The teams presented their solutions during the Dutch Technology Week and the winners were announced by Monique List-de Roos (Alderman Mobility and Transport, City of Eindhoven) on 2 June 2021. The role of BUAS within this project was to assist City of Eindhoven with the development of the challenges to be tackled by the participating teams, and find relevant speakers and mentors who would be supporting the students for the development of their solutions and jury members who would determine the winning teams. The project ended with a round table “Green and Safe Mobility for all: 5 Smart City(thon) Case studies” on November 17 organized as part of Smart City Expo World Congress 2021 in Barcelona. Hoe kan de verblijfskwaliteit en veiligheidsperceptie van de publieke ruimte versterkt worden door de toepassing van “interactieve objecten”? (objecten die met beeld, licht, geluid en sensoren real time reageren op de gebruikers en de ruimte daarop afstemmen). De ontwikkeling van deze zogenaamde responsieve ruimte staat nog in de kinderschoenen maar is beloftevol vanwege de meerwaarde voor de leefbaarheid en het onderscheidend vermogen van de plek en de bedrijven. In Co-ReUs worden drie verschillende mkb groepen samengebracht: stedenbouwbureaus, creatieve conceptontwikkelaars en lokale ondernemers. We gebruiken de ArenA-Boulevard als proeftuin: een als ongezellig ervaren ruimte (lage verblijfskwaliteit en slechte veiligheidsperceptie). De mkb-ers lossen hiermee hun eigen praktijkproblemen op: Stedenbouwbureaus houden zich bezig met het ontwerp van de publieke ruimte. Zij merken dat hun instrumentarium (herontwerp, herbestrating etc.) te kapitaalintensief en te weinig flexibel is om de verblijfskwaliteit en veiligheidsperceptie op dit soort plekken op te lossen. De bureaus hebben behoefte aan een lichter, gerichter en responsiever instrumentarium. Ze hebben echter beperkte (technologische) kennis hoe interactieve objecten precies een bijdrage kunnen leveren. Creatieve conceptontwikkelaars hebben een ander probleem: zij hebben wél de beschikking over interactieve objecten (geluid, beeld, licht, sensoren) maar die zijn vooral kunstzinnig en evenementiëel. De objecten zijn stuk voor stuk niet ontwikkeld vanuit een stedenbouwkundige opgave waardoor ze hiervoor geen panklare oplossing vormen. Lokale mkb-ers hebben ook een probleem: zij weten niet goed hoe zij op een gecoördineerde manier invloed kunnen uitoefenen op de activering van de publieke ruimte. Project Co-ReUs: 1) analyseert hoe de ruimte wordt gebruikt (nulmeting en Programma van Eisen voor de inzet van interactieve objecten; 2) ontwikkelt ruimtelijk-interactieve interventies in co-creatie met de drie mkb groepen. 3) deze worden op het plein geplaatst en nametingen brengen de effecten in beeld. Het resultaat is een actiegerichte Handleiding met Roadmap voor de ontwikkeling van responsieve publieke ruimtes.
