How can transport and land-use transitions in urban regions be understood and supported? This question is increasingly relevant for researchers and policy makers alike given the growing urgency of sustainability issues confronting cities and the limited improvements can be observed despite continued policy attention, for example Transit-oriented development policies. To tackle this question, this thesis draws on theories and concepts from transition studies. This has led to a richer conceptualisation of transitions and the extent to which policy makers can actively influence them. Transport and land-use transitions can be seen as resulting from the interaction between established and novel structures and practices and exogenous developments. In historic case studies carried out in Munich and Zürich, we see that in transitions that have taken place troubles, or difficulties that people experience in their daily lives, play an important role in focusing political debates. In the process of reaching consensus regarding problems and solutions, interest groups, coalition building and both implicit and explicit societal rules open to conflict and supportive of its resolution play a pivotal role. To aid in supporting transition attempts, a reflexive planning approach has been developed and tested in the region of Amsterdam. The breadth of the focus in this approach in terms of developments considered and actors involved resulted in potential solutions that differed from traditional policy in terms of innovativeness and the extent of support for them.

This paper focuses on the use of discrete event simulation (DES) as a decision support tool for airport land use development. As a study case, Querétaro Airport (Mexico) is used, due to its rapid growth and the different services it offers. The SIMIO® software was used to carry out a macro-level simulation of the airport’s processes, considering generic process times, flight types and demand schedules. The resulting strategic simulation model can be used to diagnose the current growth situation, analyse the airport's growth potential, and evaluate different expansion scenarios using the available land, including the expansion of the terminal building, cargo operations or MRO. The arrival and departure of aircraft (commercial, cargo, maintenance, aviation school and private aviation) at the airport were simulated to detect bottlenecks for different expansion scenarios, that aim to find an optimal balance between the growth options in the different airport grounds. The objective is to compare the potential growth of different layout expansion possibilities. Preliminary results indicate that land use options have a great impact on the growth potential of the airport and some general aviation activities, such as the aviation school, are interfering with the potential growth of other activities at Querétaro Airport.
In this article, we assess the potential of alternative land use systems using non-drainage peatland species which could eventually phase out or partly replace oil palm plantations on undrainable peatlands. We have used the ecosystem services approach to analyse what scenarios using drainage-free peatland species could be suitable alternatives for oil palm cultivation on peat and how these scenarios compare to oil palm plantations in terms of selected ecosystem services. Our results indicate that alternative paludiculture systems will provide more direct and indirect ecosystem services than oil palm plantations on peat. We also found that stakeholders were aware of issues with growing oil palm on peat, and that there was a general intention for sustainable use of peatlands amongst several groups of stakeholders. Replacing oil palm with alternative systems such as paludiculture in Malaysia is not yet realistic. The most important impediments are a lack of knowledge on potential of non-drainage peatland species and its associated value chains, as well as the technical difficulty for smallholders to implement such a system. We recommend starting experimental plantings with paludiculture systems to further test species performance, life cycle analysis, growth, intercropping limitations and possibilities, yields and improvements in the value chain.

Grote steden staan de komende decennia voor enorme uitdagingen om ruimtelijke herstructurering en versterking van sociaaleconomische posities van bepaalde wijken, te combineren met leefbaarheids-, duurzaamheids-, en mobiliteitsambities. Dit zijn vraagstukken waar bij uitstek verschillende fysieke, sociale, economische en bestuurlijke professionals moeten samenwerken. Dit onderzoek richt zicht op boundary spanners, professionals die een sleutelrol spelen in het verbinden van domeinoverstijgende vraagstukken. Met de toename en complexiteit van maatschappelijke vragen in het grootstedelijke domein groeit ook de behoefte aan en het belang van boundary spanners in het realiseren van effectieve samenwerking. Kennis over de effectiviteit van hun werkpraktijken blijft echter achter. Gezien de urgentie van grootstedelijke vraagstukken, is het van groot belang deze kennis te ontwikkelen. De (grootstedelijke) professionals die in de rol van boundary spanner vervullen of die rol ambiëren vragen zich dan ook af: Hoe krijg ik zicht op mijn eigen boundary spanner praktijk als individu of binnen een team werken, welke mogelijke verbeteringen zijn er in ons handelen en wat daarvan is overdraagbaar naar andere professionals en andere situaties? Door deze praktijkvraag te combineren met theoretische kennis vanuit bestuurskunde en verandermanagement, geeft dit onderzoek antwoord op de overkoepelende onderzoeksvraag: Wat zijn de kenmerken van de werkpraktijken waarin (grootstedelijke) professionals, die we kunnen typeren als of boundary spanners, de grenzen tussen domeinen bij grootstedelijke vraagstukken weten te overbruggen? Het onderzoek is een co-creatie van stedelijke professionals in teams van vijf praktijkcases: het programma Haven-Stad (Amsterdam); de regiodeal Den Haag Zuidwest; het project Cruciale Mijl (Amsterdam); Combiwel buurtwerk (Amsterdam) en het team gebiedsadviseurs (Amsterdam), met onderzoekers van de Centres of Expertise van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam en de Haagse Hogeschool. Dit onderzoek expliciteert de werkregels die boundary spanners in staat stelt om domeinoverstijgend te werken en levert op die manier een wezenlijke bijdrage aan het realiseren van deze grootstedelijke vraagstukken.
