The increasing number of earthquakes in recent years in Groningen region causes unrest among the inhabitants of Groningen and surrounding villages. There has been effects in the region related to, for example, the house safety, quality of life, investments, and property values. Only in Loppersum, approximately more than half of the houses were reported damaged. The earthquake problem in Groningen exhibits particularly difficulties due to the soft soil properties in the region as well as the vulnerability of the structural inventory.
The Research Group on Earthquake Resistant Structures conducts practical research on earthquake engineering in general. The seismic resistance of the Groningen houses, strengthening schemes, and seismic safety of the historical buildings in the region are on top of the research agenda.
Hanze University of Applied Sciences, an institution with close ties with the regional institutions and companies, in collaboration with the Economic Board of Groningen, developed "Build in Groningen" (BuildInG, www.building.nl ). BuildinG is a hub of knowledge and expertise for companies, knowledge and education institutions, governments and residents for the earthquake resistant and innovative construction. The Research Group on Earthquake Resistant Structures plays an important role in completing and implementing the BuildInG research program.
